Victorian and Edwardian Children's Clothing

*
~ In Victorian period there was not a separate style of clothing
for children as there is today.  In those times children wore basically
miniature adult clothing.  As you will see little girls and young ladies wore the
same decorative style dresses as their mother wore.  It was not until late in the
Edwardian period that children's clothing became more relaxed and not as
restricting and cumbersome as adult clothing.

~ During the Victorian Era it was customary
for young boys up to four or six years old
to wear dresses.  Below there are several
photos  of these little guys...you can
identify them by their short hair.  After
 dresses boys advanced to knickers
and at last to long pants.

The 1876 Fashion Plate to the right
displays childrens fashions...notice
the boy sitting is wearing a dress while
his older brother has advanced to knickers.
