The photographs on these pages are examples of the early bustle period from approximately 1866 to 1875.

In 1866 the shape of the skirt begins to change from the "bell" shape of the Civil War period to a bustle. The skirts become smaller in circumference, with the emphasis placed in the back bustle area. The waistline remains high, the sleeves are roomy and still retain the drop shoulder until about 1870.
