Such a rare original circa 1868 lady's two piece corded cotton seaside costume with a long polonaise style jacket with split tail and striking black stylized chain stitch embroidered trim and silk fringe accents.
The bodice is cotton lined, with passementerie buttons to the front closure, piped drop shoulder seams to the coat sleeves, and matching passementerie buttons and loops at each side to raise the side hems, one shown up and one down.
The unlined skirt has a directionally box pleated waistband and a back adjustable drawstring to the waistband. Recently deaccessioned from a major New York museum collection.
It was a rare opportunity to acquire this unique seaside costume of the late 1860's.
